Tyswan Slater is an emerging visual artist and writer. She lives and works in Dharug and Gundagurra country, in Colomata (the Blue Mountains).
She recently graduated from a Visual Arts course at TAFE, and is also a former graphic designer and mathematician. Her work incorporates symmetry, geometry, and patterns. A sense of place informs her ideas, and she’s inspired by both sprawling escarpments and the minutia of overlooked micro worlds.
Through mixed media collage, painting, and cyanotype, Tyswan explores nature as a collection of interconnected fragments, and the disconnection between humanity and the environment. Her multi-panel artworks both fragment and connect, often utilising a square format which symbolises clean geometry, the imposed division of landscapes into grids and coordinates, and our increasingly digitised world.
Visual Art
Tyswan studied fine art at the National Art School, and has recently returned to visual arts after a chronic illness. Whilst studying visual art at TAFE, she began exploring different mediums, including cyanotype and mixed media.

Writing
Tyswan is an award-winning short-story writer, whose work explores themes of belonging, isolation, and identity. Her novel manuscripts have received recognition by Varuna Writers’ Centre, and her short stories have appeared in various anthologies.
