Painting
I have been painting for over twenty years, but took a break to raise a child and focus on my writing. My works are typically large landscapes, figurative studies or portraits, and still life, often featuring decorative elements. I paint primarily in oils, but also work in acrylic. My colour palettes typically feature prussian blue and burnt umber, with orange (crimson/warm yellow), and some purple and pink elements.
My stylised portraits of women are influenced by the work of Alfonse Mucha, Sydney Long, Gustav Klimt, and Amedeo Modigliani.
My abstract and landscape work is detailed, with elements of pointillism and decorative arts that subtly acknowledge indigenous presences in the landscape. I’m influenced by Wassily Kandinsky, William Robinson, and the indigenous Western Desert Art Movement typified by Papunya Tula.
My still life work takes inspiration from Giorgio Morandi and Henri Matisse.
Works on Paper
I have recently moved away from representation, and my works on paper are more abstract and organic. I’m currently exploring themes of the disconnection between humanity and the environment, juxtaposing control, order, and rigidity with natural, unrestrained, and complex systems. This mostly involves exploring artworks related to squares that symbolise both real and perceived boundaries. The format of squares and cubes allow me to explore ideas of disconnection, fragmentation and synthesis, isolation and connection, and traditional and digital mediums.
I utilise collage, cyanotype, ink, pen, acrylic, gouache, and watercolour, but also enjoy drypoint and collograph printing.
Illustration
My illustration focus is on children’s books and graphic novels. I create digital collages incorporating ink, gouache, and watercolour. I’m inspired by illustrators such as Mary Blair, Roman Muradov, and Stephen Michael-King.
Sculpture
I spent two years learning bronze foundry sculpture at the National Art School under the tutelage of Clara Hali, producing primarily figurative work. At TAFE, I explored ceramics and mixed media.
My abstract work explores form and negative space, influenced by the work of Jacques Lipchitz, Catriona Pollard, and Wassily Kandinsky. My figurative sculptures are influenced by Amedeo Modigliani and Auguste Rodin.
Materials include cast bronze, found objects, natural fibres, ceramic and recycled e-waste.
